C92, “an Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families.”

On Jan. 1, 2020, a new law regarding First Nation Child Welfare was Proclaimed by the federal government.   This Act recognized First Nations Inherent right to jurisdiction over child welfare which includes the right to create Anishinaabe family law.

My name is Dion Peterson, I work for SCO as the CFS Community Engagement Liaison at the Brokenhead Band Office to help our members suggest new laws to replace the current provincial system.

As a community Engagement Liaison, I am interested in any cultural information you may have from your family on how we raised our children before European contact, we hope to make this as Cultural as possible.

This process will take time, all relevant and realistic ideas will be put forward for discussion.

ALL IDEAS WILL BE MADE PUBLIC AND ANONYMOUS.

Some ideas may be reworded for clarity issues, I will discuss that privately with the author before I put it out for public discussion.

I would also like to have a number of fluent Anishinaabe speakers for translation purposes.

We invite all members that are interested to offer their ideas to help the community re-establish our cultural practice of raising our children, as was done before European contact.

This is not a political forum; political comments will not be posted.

Please feel free to share this information with anyone who you think may be interested, and please have them contact me at the Band office, 204-766-2494.

My email is Dion.peterson@scoinc.mb.ca

I look forward to hearing from you!
