Treaty 1 Territory

August 25, 2020

On August 24, 2020 Brokenhead Ojibway Nation (BON) sent two letters, one to the Province of Manitoba and a second to the Government of Canada, outlining our concerns with the proposed CanWhite Sands Corporation’s (“CanWhite”) proposed silica sand processing facility development project (the “Project”) near Vivian, Manitoba.

BON requested that this proposed Project be suspended so that the Project can be reviewed by a Joint Federal/Provincial Panel for its adverse impacts, which includes not only CanWhite’s proposed silica sand processing facility, but also the silica sand mine and mining method to extract the silica sand. CanWhite is attempting to have Manitoba approve the mine and mining method extraction as a separate development project in a separate Environment Act License.

Secondly, BON has also requested that the Crown immediately undertake Section 35 Consultation with BON, as we firmly believe that our Treaty Rights maybe impact by this proposed development project and that the Section 35 Consultation process with BON and the Crown occur before the Environment Act Approval process begins.
