It has been brought to our attention that an individual or individuals have been dumping shingles within the reserve boundaries. This notice is a reminder that illegal dumping of waste of any kind is prohibited on BON Lands and will not be tolerated.
The Lands Department is unsure if the person or persons who were dumping the shingles are from the community or from outside the community. However, we are requesting the following:
- Anyone who witnesses any illegal dumping of shingles or any other debris report the incident to the following departments – Lands Department, BON Peace Officers or the BON Housing Department.
- If indeed the recent dumping of shingles was committed by a community member, we are requesting that the debris be cleaned up and taken to the Libau Landfill.
- On – reserve Housing Contractors are being advised to contact the Housing Department to work with the department regarding their regulations in the disposal of housing construction waste.
There is a significant cost to BON when this type of activity occurs that include the cost to remove the waste/debris and depending on the type of material it may require an environmental assessment. The clean-up could be costly and there is no budget to cover this.
As community members, we have a duty and responsibility to keep our land safe, clean and free from contamination.
If you have any questions, please contact the Lands Department at (204) 766-2494.
